A Daily Diatribe by a Pompous Git

Who is that fat bastard? A Sturm's Eye View, Guaranteed Free of Harmful, or Potentially Harmful Chemicals -- but Watch Out for the Ideas! Some of them are Contagious!

A journal of sorts to record Jonathan Sturm's (and others') thoughts and observations on things worth thinking about. Feedback welcome, but be aware that unless you prominently say you want your communication kept private, I may publish it.

Last week, The Git wrote "The university intranet has been 'improved'". After farting around installing a later version of Adobe Acrobat Reader and changing Active-X and Java settings, The Git gave up trying to get his supported web browser (IE) working with Web CT and installed an unsupported web browser, Mozilla Firefox, and it works perfectly. It shouldn't, as Web CT said it wouldn't (as did the online help) without installing Sun's java Runtime. The dialog box for installing that plug-in still says "Copying new files. This may take several minutes" an hour after starting the install. The appropriate PDF documents that would not open under IE have been and printed for annotation.

The Git was going to post something on Friday -- a difficult day as it's the sixth anniversary of a young friend's suicide -- but much to The Git's amazement, his somewhat older friend, Michael Henrysson, turned up out of the blue. A good time was had by all, including the consumption of considerable quantities of crayfish (lobster) and excellent white wine.
